Thicket Series

My “Thicket Paintings” continue an exploration of the landscape using a magnified perspective. I spent the fall, winter and spring hiking the remote trails of a county park near my studio and became fascinated with stands of hawthorn trees growing side by side, overlapping their branches to form a complex mass of line, value, pattern and color. Studying these simple elements became a vehicle for me to move from representational depiction to more abstracted work.

These works use paint and mark-making to describe my experience in the woods. They are inspired by my childhood mentor Gabor Peterdi, who often invited my family and me into his Connecticut studio to see his new paintings. He, too, found inspiration in nature and used complex brushwork to depict his immersion in nature.
